Unit 7 - Fire Extinguishing Systems & Associated Electrical & Building Interfaces

Overview
Concentrating on fixed fire extinguishing systems and the associated electrical and building interfaces including chemical, inert gas and carbon dioxide and watermist and is centred around the latest British and European Standards. This course is intended to provide an outline knowledge of fixed fire fighting systems; it will benefit a broad range of delegates from fire systems installers to facilities managers and owners. Covering the principles of fire and extinguishing, delegates will learn how extinguishing systems work and where they are best suited in application. Delegates with any involvement in suppression systems - from installers and maintainers through consultants, designers and insurers to the end user - will all benefit. This is an intensive course with a lot of information; all technical content is presented in a manner that will be accessible to everyone and with reference to suppression systems in many commercial buildings, this course is a necessity for everyone involved in
them.

The Course
This intensive course is run over one day and covers the current requirements under British and European Standards as well as other draft and prescriptive documents. Delegates will develop an understanding of chemical, inert gas, carbon dioxide, and watermist systems along with the associated electrical and building interfaces.

Who should attend?
This course is intended for anyone with an involvement in fixed fire suppression systems including fire alarm engineers and installers, consultants, specifiers, insurers and the end user including the responsible person and building maintenance teams.

Programme
Delegates will gain an understanding of:
• Extinguishing systems including chemical (e.g. FM-200), inert gas (e.g. IG-55), carbon dioxide and watermist (high and low pressure)
• Detection systems and interface to fire alarm and building management systems
• Pressure relief and extraction systems
• Types of design (Local application, total flood)
• Design guidance
• Maintenance guidance
• Coverage of over 26 current and draft British and International Standards, codes of practice and associated literature

Outcome
All course delegates will be provided with a comprehensive manual covering the material included in this unit and additional support material, serving as a valuable point of reference after completion of the course. The ongoing assessment included during the day will allow the trainer to monitor progress and provide additional assistance to learning where required. Delegates achieving 75% or more in the assessments will be awarded an FIA certificate stating that they have attended and passed the course.

NB:
During this course you will be provided with a manual to assist in the learning process and there are tests where you will be expected to read questions and write answers. The FIA is unable to make special provision for those who are unable to complete these tasks.

Benefits
Benefits to the individual and your company:

  • A thorough knowledge of a range of fire suppression systems including their use and operation, interface with the building and electrical systems
  • Guidance on their design and maintenance
  • An understanding of the current and draft standards and associated documentation
